This is What Organic Means When it Comes to Beauty Products

Calling All Green Beauty Lovers: Here’s What You Need to Know About the Products You Purchase

You’ll hear me talking a lot about the word organic. More than 90% of what I consume on a daily basis is organic. But I don’t just stop there. Everything from my toothpaste to body wash to my makeup follows the same percentage. Even the products I use to make my hair shiny and soft are completely organic.

Organic is a term that signifies that whatever you are purchasing is derived from sources that aren’t treated with harmful chemicals and pesticides. I find it much easier to shop for organic food items than beauty items because reading nutrition labels has become second nature to me.

With organic beauty products, it’s not always as easy. It’s incredibly important to research not only the products themselves, but also the company as a whole.

There are different levels of certification brands have to adhere to in order to label themselves organic. If a product is 95%-100% organic, it can display the USDA organic seal.

This is not to be confused with products labeled “all  natural,” which need very little regulation and thereby tend to be laden with chemicals, and “made with organic ingredients,” because those products only have to contain 70% organic ingredients (meaning the rest of the ingredients can be derived from…well…plenty of not-so-good-for-you ingredients).

But that’s where researching the company becomes vital. There are plenty of products out there who are just starting out and source the cleanest, most organic and biodynamic ingredients, but haven’t gotten the USDA organic seal because it’s quite pricey and some companies are simply not ready to front that cost right away. Totally understandable.

I find the more that I research companies and speak with them about their process, the more I’m open to purchasing products that either aren’t 100% organic or that simply haven’t gone through the process of obtaining the USDA organic seal.

I wrote an article diving more deeply into this topic for PopSugar. You can find it here.

Let me know if you’d like me to share my daily beauty routine along with all of the products I use! 🙂
